FAQ’s

about the summer retreat
What can I expect from a Freedom to Write Retreat?

The main idea behind a writing retreat is to allow you to protect some time and space for your own writing, whether responding to a writing prompt that we will set, or just getting on with your own project. Our aim is to be responsive to your needs and we will tailor the writing sessions accordingly.

We also offer tuition. The tutors will each lead a session based on our own experiences of writing and publishing and will offer practical advice to aspiring writers of life experience.

There will also be one-to-one mentoring at the retreat.

How many people will be at the writing retreat?

There will be about 12 guests at the retreat.

What is included in the price?

Tutoring, one-to-one mentoring, accommodation, all meals, coffee/tea, homemade cakes, are included in the price. Bed linen (in the vans and The Hayloft) and toiletries are included. Some alcohol (wine with meals) is included in the price and there will be additional bottles of wine available to purchase if you wish to do so.

What is NOT included in the price?

If you are staying in tents you will need to bring your own bedding. Towels are not included. We ask that you bring your own writing implements, laptops, chargers, battery packs, and any necessary medication. Bring tennis rackets & balls (if you fancy a game) and swimming costume if you want to go wild swimming.

Is there power on site?

The vintage caravans date from the 1930s and have no electricity.  Lighting is by way of low level solar, fairy lights, lanterns and candles. There is electricity in two areas of the campsite and multi-socket extension leads will be provided, but we strongly recommend that you bring a battery pack.

Is there a bathroom in the vans?

The shower and toilets are located in the showershack. There are two toilets on site – a conventional flushing one and also a composting loo. Every endeavour has been made to make the glampsite as eco-friendly as possible. We provide organic toiletries so no need to bring shower gel, shampoo or conditioner with you.

How do I pay?

We request that you pay by bank transfer and we will email you the details of how to pay by BACS at the time of booking. We are requesting payment in full at time of booking.

What happens if I book and have to cancel?

Freedom to Write has a strict and transparent cancellation policy, which is applied regardless of circumstances, so it is essential you understand these terms before you book.

If you have to cancel, we will give you a refund only if we can find a replacement for your place. We cannot refund your fee if we are unable to fill the place or if you are unable to attend at the last minute. We strongly recommend you have travel insurance in place to cover any eventualities which mean you might not be able to join us.

What happens if the course doesn't run for any reason?

We have all got used to events being cancelled due to Covid. If we have to cancel the retreat for this or any other reason, we would hope to postpone it to a later date in the year. If this doesn’t suit you, we will of course refund your booking fee in full. We cannot be held responsible for any other costs, e.g. flights, and strongly recommend you have insurance in place to cover this.

What will the food be like and can you cater for specific dietary requirements?

We will have a professional caterer at the writing retreat. We will eat at the long table in the Summer Kitchen or round the campfire. Homemade cakes and traybakes will be available throughout the retreat. We cater for vegetarians and vegans. If you have other dietary requirements, please let us know before booking and we will do our very best to accommodate them.
