For the last 3 years, the Freedom To Write Summer Retreat has taken place at Mad Dogs and Vintage Vans, which has a gorgeous glamping site, nestled in a wildflower meadow in the grounds of a Grade 2 listed Old Rectory that looks directly west over the Wye Valley towards the Black Mountains and the Hay Bluff. Step back in time with a stay in a vintage caravan dating from the 1930s, 40s and 50s, or treat yourself to a little luxury with a room in The Hayloft. It’s a place that’s full of charm and wonder, dappled light, big skies, spectacular sunsets and starry nights. 

In 2026, we are hosting our first Winter Writing Retreat in the beautiful Georgian city of Bath. It will take place 9th to 12th January. So, if it is a perennial New Year’s resolution to write your memoir, why not treat yourself to three nights of writing and relaxation in one of the most beautiful cities in the world? The house dates from the early 18th century and is right in the centre of town, close to the Roman baths and thermal spa. It has six bedrooms spread over three floors, and there is plenty of space to write in private, as well as lots of lovely social spaces.    

Each day at a retreat typically starts (after breakfast) with a tutorial. You will be set a writing exercise or two, which we do as a group, and then you’re free to spend the day writing your own material and putting into practice what you’ve learned. There will be one-to-one mentoring from the tutors as well – a chance to talk about your writing project and how you can achieve your ambitions for it. We come together in the early evening to share our writing over a glass of wine (though neither are compulsory!)
